<image:title>Salmon in the Classroom - Salmon in the Classroom</image:title>
<image:caption>Fifth grade teachers at South Whidbey Elementary School began raising salmon in the classroom and releasing them into Maxwelton Creek in the late 1980’s, but the program ended in 2000. Lori O’Brien recreated a new program in the fall of 2013 as a parent volunteer. Lori continues to offer the program to K-5th grade students at South Whidbey Elementary School. Salmon eggs are provided by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to the school by permit to be reared in the school aquarium in conjunction with instruction on salmon life cycle and salmon anatomy. Beginning in 2019, students will raise 500 eggs, doubling the number of eggs raised in previous years. There is a tank located at the K-4 school and a second tank located at the 5-6th grade building. Fifth grade student ambassadors along with Whidbey Watershed staff will lead students in school-wide salmon education. Over 600 students will witness the hatching of pea sized eggs with large black eyes into alevin with bright orange yolk sacs who seek the protection of rocks, followed by their transformation into fry, who swim up from the rocks and take in a gulp of air, testing out their new fins for the first time. When fish reach fry stage, students gather and release their fish by hand into the Maxwelton Creek at the Outdoor Classroom. In May, a report to South Whidbey School’s Foundation is submitted as well as a Washington Fish and Wildlife Report. Our representatives present at the Foundation gala along with student ambassadors. We plan to adapt this program to accommodate a distance-learning model due to COVID-19 school closures. The program creates a sense of wonder, a sense of pride, and a sense of connection to a greater world outside of the classroom. The salmon project is made possible by the South Whidbey Schools Foundation in partnership with the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club, Whidbey Telecom and Whidbey Watershed Stewards. <image:caption>Chum and coho salmon were once plentiful in the Maxwelton creek, nearshore, and estuary. (Click to see a timeline of Salmon in Maxwelton Creek.) The Maxwelton Watershed encompasses not only the drainage basin for the Maxwelton system but the nearshore marine environment in adjacent shoreline areas of Useless Bay, including adjoining coastal bluffs. This nearshore habitat is an important feeding and rearing stop for migrating salmon in several life stages, including Chinook, Coho and Chum salmon. By 1955, however, the salmon runs were believed to be extinct. Maxwelton is the largest watershed on Whidbey Island, and it was just one of many stream systems where fish were disappearing.</image:caption>

The Smith & Minor Island Aquatic Reserve was designated in 2010 for its wealth of biodiversity. From Fort Ebey to Joseph Whidbey State Park, you can see the waters of the Reserve, walk along public beaches and in the distance you can see Smith and Minor Islands. Just to the west of those islands lies the largest kelp forest left in Puget Sound.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Facilities - Langley Environmental Learning Center</image:title>
<image:caption>In the spring of 2020, Whidbey Watershed Stewards expanded its environmental educational footprint, opening an Environmental Learning Center (ELC) in Langley at the South Whidbey Community Center. This space allows us to expand our programming and better serve the community through new possibilities for public programs, lectures, events, exhibits, as well as, collaborations with other organizations. Ultimately, and most importantly, what we plan to create is a safe learning space for all ages, where they can participate in exploring the natural environment with a spotlight on the general health and environmental issues of the Salish Sea. As of January, 2022 programming at the ELC has come to a pause due to a flooding event. We hope to reopen this space after reconstruction is finished in the summer of this year. Stay tuned for future programs at the ELC! Directions to the Environmental Learning Center: South Whidbey Community Center, Room 109</image:caption>

<image:title>Annual Campaigns - Please consider a gift to Whidbey Watershed Stewards in your year-end giving. All of our programs depend on community support. A great way to support our organization online at the end of the year is through GivingTuesday: GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving go to GivingTuesday.org and donate to your favorite non-profit, or directly to our Network for Good page to show your commitment to watershed health and education.</image:title>

<image:title>Annual Campaigns (Copy) - Each summer, we host a private fundraising event complete with engaging presentations from guests and staff, dining, homemade pie and art auctions, music, and lively conversation. This enchanting event changes location each summer, taking place at the private residences of friends of WWS. Ticket sales and funds raised during the event go toward funding our important education programs. If you have donated to WWS in the past, you should already be on our mailing list and will receive an invitation by mail or email.</image:title>

<image:title>Annual Campaigns (Copy) - For a number of years, a generous anonymous donor has offered to match all donations, dollar for dollar, received before June 1, up to $5000! There couldn't be a better time to support environmental education, research, and restoration than our annual Spring Matching Challenge. Online: Click to Make A Donation to WWS Online Mail to: Whidbey Watershed Stewards, PO Box 617, Langley, WA 98260 This offer conveniently coincides with the timing of the Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG giving campaign each May. If you donate to Whidbey Watershed Stewards, that donation will also be matched by our anonymous donor! Your employer may also match your gifts to Whidbey Watershed Stewards. Many companies and organizations match their employees' giving. Microsoft, Boeing, Costco, Starbucks and Google are among the many companies in our region that generously support local non-profits through their matching gift programs. In most cases, a match from your company will double the amount of your gift. Make the most of your employer's matching, GiveBIG, and our anonymous donor's matching challenge before June 1st for the biggest impact!</image:title>

<image:title>Annual Campaigns (Copy) - Please consider a gift to Whidbey Watershed Stewards in your year-end giving.
