Outdoor Classroom Volunteer Instructors

Since the opening of the Outdoor Classroom in 1997, Whidbey Watershed Stewards has presented a steady program of K-5 lessons in spring and fall sessions. Each lesson is aligned with grade level learning objectives and is developed and guided by our staff. We have grown and adapted our lessons over the years, and continue to improve and meet the needs of teachers and students.

Volunteer instructors are an important part of our program; we would not be able to offer these small-group lessons without them.

Spring 2024 Field Trips

Outdoor Classroom Volunteer Instructors

Volunteers provide school aged children in our community memorable nature experiences at the Maxwelton Outdoor Classroom.

Join the talented crew of Outdoor Classroom volunteer teachers and help make these rich experiences happen. Whidbey Watershed Stewards staff provide the lesson plans, training, and all the tools you need to be successful! No formal teaching experience is necessary, though experience with elementary aged children is a plus.

Two opportunities for Volunteer Teacher Training to prepare for the Spring 2024 season are on:

  • April 11th

  • April 15th

At the training we go through the lesson plans, content, and materials together, review the facility and trails, and get to know each other. You will be emailed a packet of information, including the lesson plans.

You will select your desired shifts using an online scheduling tool called signupgenius.com.

The classroom is located at 7015 Maxwelton Rd, Clinton.

DETAILS:

This Spring season we will continue to enthusiastically guide students as they explore forest and stream habitats and the plants and creatures within them.

On your teaching day, volunteer instructors will guide small rotating groups through learning stations. You choose the lesson you would like to lead, the age group and the dates that work for you.

The season will run from the week of April 22nd to the week of June 9. Morning volunteer shift is from 9:15-11:15, and Afternoon volunteer shift is from 11:30-1:30. A volunteer shift includes a little bit of time to help with set up/tear down/check in, etc.
